Significance of the Winged Guardian
The Flying Winged Spirit Guardian (also sometimes called Cradle Guardian) dates back to mythologies of the Majapahit Empire, to which the roots of Balinese culture and art can be traced.
Traditionally suspended high up or placed upon a surface looking toward doors and windows, these carvings have been used in temples or homes since ancient times to ward off evil spirits and protect the premises from harm. Still culturally significant, modern Balinese artisans continue to hand craft these little guardians in many different forms.
