Ammonites are extinct invertebrates that shared the same fate as the dinosaurs, going extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period, 65 million years ago.  Modern relatives of ammonites include the nautilus, squid, cuttlefish and octopus.  Because ammonites lived exclusively in marine environments, their presence also indicates the location of prehistoric seas
